The residencies that took place in 2001 and 2002 brought together artists with a variety of disciplines, creating connections between sculpture and other practices: photography, painting, drawing, sound, video, installation, and more. Artists working with sound and images (fixed or moving) were particularly numerous at Est-Nord-Est during these two years.
The cohabitation of these artists with those sculpting in wood (or in other materials, such as metal, plaster, resin, and paint) provoked unexpected encounters: some invented new filming or presentation mechanisms, others experimented with sculpture techniques, and still others incorporated sculptural elements into their works. Reciprocally, for artists in residency who didn’t work with images or sound, the presence of these practices triggered exchanges and opened their approaches to new explorations.
