This publication was intended to be the record of an event that took place in summer 1997 at the Centre de sculpture Est-Nord-Est in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. The event was the fifth edition of a biennial event known as Les Studios d’été. In the wake of Histoires de bois (1988), Photo Sculpture (1990), Déplacements (1992), and Métissages (1994), the 1997 event brought together artists for almost two months, during which time they produced works that were then shown for the first time at the Musée régional de Rimouski. Highlighting the ties between popular culture and contemporary art, Les Lieux communs provided an opportunity to foster the creation of artworks of a specific nature and to provoke fruitful encounters and rich exchanges between the project’s participants and various publics.
