Residency for Canadian Curators and Writers of Contemporary Art 2016 – Application Form

Est-Nord-Est, an artist-run centre, offers technical support and a critical context to artists engaged in the process of research / creation through its residency program. In order to encourage contemporary art writing and curating in Canada, Est-Nord-Est has set up a residency program for Canadian curators and writers of contemporary art. The residency periods are in the spring, summer and fall with each one having up to four artists and one curator or writer. For four weeks, a curator or writer is given the opportunity to work and carry out research in a stimulating and vibrant cultural environment.

Convinced of the importance of bringing together curators and writers of contemporary art and artists with their work, Est-Nord-Est hopes to promote and stimulate a close relationship between the artists in residence and professional curators and writers of art. With studios nearby and the living spaces shared with the artists, the curator or writer can closely follow the process of “art being made.” Moreover, he

or she is encouraged to develop a critical reflection on the artists’ works and their creative process while in residence.

Originally based on the idea of an encounter between contemporary sculpture practices and those using traditional skills, Est-Nord-Est today welcomes artists from all disciplines who have a contemporary visual art practice. The residencies at Est-Nord-Est are intended for both established and emerging professional artists from all around the world. Est-Nord-Est is part of Res Artis – Worldwide Network of Artist Residencies, one of the host organizations for Pépinières européenes pour jeunes artistes and a member of the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec.

Est-Nord-Est is located in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, a village on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, about 115 kms from Quebec City and 350 kms from Montreal. The region features a strong presence of farmland and forests along with the maritime atmosphere of the River.

Conditions:

The residency of 4 weeks includes the following:

-An honorarium of $595.00;

-A fee of $260.00 for curators or writers who would like to write a 1000-word

text on the 4 artists in residence for publication in Memento 2016;

-Lodging in a house close to the studios, which is shared with the artists whose residency is 8 weeks;

-Access to a private studio;

-Logistical support;

-Use of a bicycle.

Residency periods:

Spring: May 23 to June 17, 2016 / Summer: July 25 to August 19, 2016 / Fall: October 3 to 28, 2016.

Your application must include:

– A curriculum vitae (two pages maximum, Word (.doc / .rtf ) or PDF format);

– A letter of intention (one page maximum, Word (.doc / .rtf ) or PDF format);

– Copies of two published texts on contemporary art (exhibition review or critique, essay, text for a catalogue, brochure or art book, etc.);

– The completed application form.

Residents are selected by a jury of peers. Est-Nord-Est bring together artists and curators or writers whose practices and interests are of a complementary nature or are in dialogue with each other, and are appropriate to the specificity of the residency.

Est-Nord-Est offers to the artists:

– Time and space for research and experimentation

– A contact with an expanded milieu of unique know-how, skills and resources

– An international art community

The selection of the artists is made in accordance with the following criteria :

– The artistic quality of the proposal

– The potential impact of the residency on the artisticwork

– A constructive, iteractive multiplicity of art practices

– Gender and generational diversity

– A representation of artists from Quebec, Canada and around the world.
