Residency for Canadian Curator and Writer in Contemporary Art
Présentation
Est-Nord-Est is an artist-run centre which offers, through its residency program, technical support and a critical context to artists engaged in the process of research / creation. Founded originally on the idea of offering to contemporary sculptors a context to work and exchange in contact with a unique traditional savoir-faire, Est-Nord-Est today welcomes artists involved in all disciplines and practices associated with current visual art. Est-Nord-Est is situated in the village of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, about 115kms from Quebec City, 350kms from Montreal. The region presents a unique mixture of forest, a strong agricultural presence and the atmosphere of the waterway.
With the intent to encourage the development of art writing and professional curatorial practice in Canadian contemporary art, Est-Nord-Est launched in 2012 to its regular program of residency for Canadian curators and writers in contemporary art. Convinced of the importance and the value of the meeting of art and words, this initiative hopes to promote and stimulate a fertile relationship between artists in residence at Est-Nord-Est and Canadian professionals working in the sphere of the mediation of Art. The curators and writers share a work environment with the artists. In this way, they can pursue their own research while being involved, through exchange and discussion, in a context of “art in the making”. They will also be encouraged to develop a critical reflexion on the resident artists work and their creative processes.
Two residencies are offered each year, in the spring and fall. Up to four artists and a curator or a writer may participate in each residence, eight weeks for the artists, six weeks for the curator or the writer.
Est-Nord-Est is a member of Res Artis – Worldwide Network of Artist Residencies, the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec, and is among the host organisations for Pépinières européenes pour jeunes artistes.
Modalities
Curators and writers receive a 841,50$ stipend and free lodging for the six-week period of the residence. A 255$ writer’s fee will also be paid for texts on the residency produced for publication by Est-Nord-Est (250 words per artist). Curators and writers have access to an individual studio space, documentation on the artists, certain electronic equipment, logistical support… and a bicycle. The artists and the curator or the writer share a collective house next door to the Est-Nord-Est studios. It has five bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, two bathrooms and a laundry room.
