Call for applications 2013

Artist-in-residency program

Presentation

Est-Nord-Est is an artist-run centre which offers, through its residency program, technical support and a critical context to artists engaged in the process of research / creation. Three residencies are offered per year, in the spring, summer and fall. Up to four artists and a curator or a writer may participate in each residence, eight weeks for the artists, four weeks for the curator or the writer. This is a unique occasion for both the artists and other art professionals to step out of their normal everyday situation to pursue a research project in a different, stimulating, vibrant environment; one characterized by the rural setting, the friendly welcome attentive to everyone’s needs, the abundance of local resources, the quality of the technical and logistical assistance and the richness of the exchange with the other participants of various origins participating in the residency.

Est-Nord-Est is situated in the village of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, about 115kms from Quebec City, 350kms from Montreal. The region presents a unique mixture of forest, a strong agricultural presence and the atmosphere of the waterway.

Founded originally on the idea of offering to contemporary sculptors a context to work and exchange in contact with a unique traditional savoir-faire, Est-Nord-Est today welcomes artists from all over the world involved in all disciplines and practices associated with current visual art.

Est-Nord-Est is a member of Res Artis – Worldwide Network of Artist Residencies, the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec, and is among the host organizations for Pépinières européenes pour jeunes artistes.

Fabriquer l’improbable /To Make the Improbable

In addition to our regular program of research/residencies, Est-Nord Est also produces, every three years, a major thematic public event or manifestation. During the summer 2013, a special residency, selected by invited curators Dominique Allard and Véronique Leblanc, will work on the theme : Fabriquer l’improbable / To Make the Improbable. The improbable manifests itself in diverse ways, for instance through works of art that provoke astonishment, wonder and fascination. Various strategies can produce the improbable, such as: unusual meeting between an art work and a place, the exploration of imperceptible phenomena, the heterogeneous conjonction of materials and / or objects, the setting in motion of inanimate elements and the ingeneous creation of unlikely mechanisms and devices of a poetic nature. To make the improbable is understood here as the many possibilities that can generate unrestricted and utopian ways of apprehending and understanding the world, producing a gap with what is familiar. Artists interested in submitting their application for regular residency, whose approach coincides with the proposed theme, can demonstrate their interest in participating in the event by responding to the question below.

Do you want your application to be consulted by the curators of the the event Farbriquer l’improbable / To Make the Improbable?
